-15C Cold Anomalies 12x More Likely Than +15C Hot Anomalies in Canada

Update: Clarified these are monthly average anomalies – not daily anomalies.

Environment Canada has Normals for some of its stations. They get a calculated anomaly in relation to the 1971-2000 average.

193 stations have had a monthly anomaly of -15C or lower. 51 of those occurred in 1936.

Only 16 stations have had a monthly anomaly of +15C or higher. None of those have occurred since 1994. (See below)

  1. It’s interesting that February of 1936 was so cold because it was followed in July with the worst heatwave to ever hit Canada.

Here in BC, the most brutal winter on record was 1968/1969 (because of how long the cold lasted). January of 1950 was also a record breaking cold snap.

1936 makes your list 51 times, but let’s not forget that the winter of 1968/1969 makes the cold list 44 times, and January of 1950 makes the list 54 times. So far as I can tell, December of 1968 and January of 1969 are the only back-to-back months on the list.

    • Good points. My post tomorrow will use percentages and a lower cutoff – 10C. And thanks for mention consecutive months. I will write a script for that if I can. Its a good thing to look for.

For 15C, 1936 was 51 out of 2281 records. 2.2% of all the normals that year. Almost double the next closest 1950 – 1.4%. All the others are less than 1%.

Think about, 1 in 45 monthly anomalies was -15C or colder than normal. Brrr.

1969 was 4th at .44%. A lot more stations active.
