China’s economy continues to drive ahead powered by coal. They consume 50% of the world production. The use the cheap electricity produced by burning coal to manufacture inexpensive goods and then sell them all over the world.
Germany, on the other hand, has chosen to use cheap electricity to subsidize wind turbines and solar panels.
“At the center of Europe’s coal renaissance is the region around the German-Polish border, already home to five of Europe’s most polluting coal plants, says the report, which was compiled by CAN Europe, WWF, the European Environmental Bureau, the Health and Environment Alliance and Climate Alliance Germany. Swedish power firm Vattenfall GmbH is now planning to expand the number of open-cast mines in the Lausitz area to exploit its deposits of lignite, a particularly polluting type of coal.
Vattenfall says the Lausitz mines, with their vast deposits, are there to take up the slack when renewable energy sources fail to meet Germany’s needs. “Without flexible and reliable brown coal, we wouldn’t be able to provide stable electricity supplies at stable prices,” the company says on its website.”
BP does an annual review of world energy consumption, production and reserves. It is well worth a look here.
In 2013 China+HK were responsible for 50.5% of world coal consumption. The US consumed 11.9%.
China and India accounted for 88% of global growth in consumption.

Paris air pollution is getting so bad they are banning half the cars and only allowing cars with odd number plates in on some days and even numbered plates on other days.
I know the world likes to blame bad air pollution in China on the coal power plants, but Paris gets most of its electricity fro nuclear power. So obviously they got the right conclusion – blame cars. Could all the new wealth in China and all the new cars be behind their pollution, and not coal power (or not as much)?
“Hundreds of police are monitoring traffic in Paris after pollution levels prompted the French government to impose major restrictions.
Only motorists whose cars have odd-numbered registration plates are allowed to drive.
On Tuesday, if the restrictions remain in place, it will be the turn of those with even-numbered plates.
Ministers acted after air pollution exceeded safe levels for five days running in Paris and surrounding areas.
The smoggy conditions have been caused by a combination of cold nights and warm days, which have prevented pollution from dispersing.”
The preliminary reports about CO2 in 2013 are coming out. China wins! China is now so far out in front that no country will ever catch them.
China has quadrupled CO2 output since 1990, while the USA output is now back to 1990 levels.
It discredits the CO2 theory of global warming doesn’t it?
