As discussed before, these are differing results from different computers processing of passive microwave satellite signals.
I prefer NIC ice charts because they are produced considering all information sources, including but not limited to microwave signals.
As of Oct. 15, 2012, NIC shows ice extent at 6.03 M sq. km., just below Oct. 15, 2007 at 6.15 M. sq. km. Looks like the tipping point will be averted.
